Tardigrades are small 8-legged animals that are microscopic. They are the toughest animals on Earth! They are able to do this because of a special adaptation. They are able to hibernate for long periods of time. Their organs partially shut off and they “sleep” for many years. When they do this, they are resistant to radiation, temperatures, or other extreme conditions.
