Materials:
- A ripe apple
- Carving tools/scissors (ADULT SUPERVISION REQUIRED)
- Baking soda
- Salt
- Plastic resealable bag
- An adult science helper!
Safety note: This activity uses sharp cutting tools. Need adult supervision. DO NOT EAT anything in this activity.
Directions: Have an adult help make holes in the apple. Make sure they are deep enough so that the moisture can escape. You can even carve your apple to have a face! Then, mix 1/2 cup baking soda with 1/2 cup salt and pour the mixture into the plastic bag. Then, put your carved apple inside. Make sure it is completely covered with the mixture. Then, let all the air out of the bag and seal it. Leave it for 5-7 days.
When you come back, carefully pull the apple out. What do you notice? Did it shrink?
It should have shrunk a lot and dried up because the salt mixture absorbs the moisture from the apple.
