Make Your Own Craters! Activity

Materials:

  • Baking pan or wide container
  • Flour, sand, cocoa powder, etc.
  • A small ball or rock
  • An adult science helper!

Directions: Make and observe your own impact craters! Pour the flour, cocoa powder, or sand in multiple layers in the baking pan. Make sure they are layered property. Next, throw the ball or rock at the “surface” of your planet or moon. Observe the layers of the impact crater. Also, try throwing the ball at different angles as well.

This is similar to how real craters are formed because the impact causes underlying layers to come up to the surface as well.
